Lemnos Gallipoli Committee Members Meet Alfred Hospital Nurses League

Today members of the Lemnos Gallipoli Commemorative Committee, along with Peter Corlett, OAM, commmemorative sculptor visited the nurses archive at Melbourne's Alfred Hospital.

This important archive is maintained by the Alfred Hospital Nurses League and comprises an amazing historical collection of records and artefacts connected to the history of nursing, particularly at the Alfred Hospital.

Jim Claven, Secretary of the Committee found the records concerning the famous former Matron of the Alfred, Grace Wilson, who as Matron of the 3rd Australian General Hospital on Lemnos in 1915 of particular interest Our Hospital ABC - which was purchased and signed by Matron Wilson in 1916 while she was on active service in WW1.


Peter Corlett, who is designing our Memorial Sculpture, reviewed the archive, including the collection of WW1 nurses outfits and nurse photographs. These sort of records will be vital to ensuring that our sculpture is authentic and reflective of the Australian nurses who served on Lemnos.

We took the opportunity to present the Nurses League with copies of our Memorial Statue Pledge brochure.
