You're Invited - Battle of Vevi Presentation - 3pm, Sunday 22nd November 2015

Members of 1st anti-tank reg rest after Vevi withdrawal 13 April 1941. AWM 007647

As part of the program of events to mark the 31st Anniversary of the Melbourne-Thessaloniki Sister-City Relationship, I will be making a presentation on an important but little known aspect of the Hellenic link to Anzac - The Battle of Vevi in April 1941. This saw Australian and New Zealand troops fight alongside their British and Greek comrades to defend Greece from the German invasion. And it was during this battle that the Second Anzac's were formed. Just as the First Anzac's had walked on Lemnos during the Gallipoli campaign and then northern Greece during the Salonika campaign, so the Second Anzac's now returned to Greece.
When - 3pm, Sunday, 22nd November 2015
Where - Thessaloniki Association The White Tower" Hall, 439 High Street, Northcote.
The presentation is free, all welcome and refreshments will be provided.
The presentation is accompanied by a display of photographs and images from the battle, some of the Anzac's involved, photos of the area today and more.
Come along and enjoy this story of another connection between Greece and Australia forged in the service and sacrifice of the Anzac's and their Greek comrades.
Thanks to Paul Mavroudis, OAM, Christina Despoteris and all at the Thessaloniki Association "The White Tower" for their encouragement and for putting on this event.
Below are some of my photographs of the display for the event.
